Clearing Psychological Obstacles to Spiritual Growth

We have to face what psychologists call the shadow.
Not knowledge of the ultimate Self, but of one's own self --
of one's contradictions and unconsciousness. We cannot avoid that,
but we will go through that with much more success if our aim
is not only to feel better, but to find Truth.

-- Arnaud Desjardins

Psychological and spiritual transformation
are intimately intertwined. Even those fully committed to living lives of spiritual practice and expression continue to suffer the consequences of childhood, social, and cultural, and existential circumstances. Based in a grounded foundation of therapeutic technique and spiritual principles/practice, my work focuses on the psychological challenges of relationship, family, work, and emotional maturity, as well as issues of spiritual emergence, spiritual crises, and discovering the courage and the means to fulfill our highest human potential. I also work with couples and families.

Mariana Caplan has a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology and is a PhD candidate in Contemporary Spirituality. She has been working with clients for 10 years, has been immersed in meditative practice and spiritual study for 15 years, and teaches at the California Institute of Integral Studies. She is the author of six books, including: Halfway Up the Mountain: the Error of Premature Claims to Enlightenment, To Touch is to Live: the Need for Genuine Affection in an Impersonal World, The Way of Failure: Winning Through Losing, and When Sons and Daughters Choose Alternative Lifestyles.

Mariana Caplan has a private practice in Berkeley, California, and also works by telephone.
