Spiritual Guidance & Consultation

white-fruit-circleI want to unfold. Let no place in me hold itself closed, for where I am closed, I am false.
~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Since the publication of my third book, Halfway Up the Mountain: the Error of Premature Claims to Enlightenment, and the subsequent The Guru Question: the Perils and Rewards of Choosing a Spiritual Teacher and Eyes Wide Open: Cultivating Discernment on the Spiritual Path, I have become a repository for countless stories – both illuminating and disillusioning – of how demanding it is to walk the spiritual path effectively, maximizing our growth and minimizing detours and disappointments. Combined with over twenty years of psychological study, as well as immersion in yoga, Buddhism, Sufism, and Judaism, I have learned to guide people along this extraordinary and challenging journey.

Spiritual Guidance & Friendship
The spiritual path is a rocky road, full of potholes and pitfalls, and not meant to be traveled alone. Yet many people do not have reliable teachers or necessarily want one. For others, their spiritual identity is more eclectic and they don’t necessarily have a spiritual “home” yet still want and need support. Over the years in my psychotherapy practice, I have discovered that there are a number of individuals – often very seasoned on the spiritual path – who are not necessarily looking for psychotherapy, but for an ally, confidant, and experienced peer to compassionately hold their process of unfolding.

In Buddhism, kalyana mitta refers to the “spiritual friend” whose function is not that of a spiritual teacher, but as an ally and friend who supports, serves as a sounding board, embraces and shares the intensity that the spiritual path often brings, and is a heart friend. I have spent over twenty years immersed in the worlds great spiritual traditions, with a deep focus on Hinduism/yoga, Buddhism, Sufism and Judaism, and have great respect for the many ways individuals incorporate newer and older spiritual traditions into their lives.

In some cases, I provide guidance for younger and newer spiritual practitioners, to help them find a path, teacher, or set of practices suitable to their particular needs. In other cases, I offer peer support to teachers and seasoned practitioners, including feedback, helping them to work with their own challenges in their practices and teaching functions, and being their own personal, confidential ally. It is a great honor to offer this service, which is always conducted under the strictest confidentiality.

Spiritual Emergence & Spiritual Emergency
Spiritual Emergence is the process of personal awakening into a level of perceiving and functioning, which is beyond normal ego functioning. Whether through intention exploration or accidental encounter with a greater spirituality, the individual wakes up to a wider perception of life, which can be both exciting and frightening. Spiritual Emergency occurs when these awakenings become overwhelming, produce anxiety, impede functioning in daily life, jobs, and relationships. Much of modern psychiatry has failed to distinguish these episodes from mental illness. As a result, transformational crises are often suppressed by routine psychiatric care, medication, and even institutionalization. Learn more about Spiritual Emergence and Spiritual Emergency here.

I believe that complimentary approaches including psychotherapy, psychiatry, exercise, and nutrition can help to restore a sense of balance and integrate these profound experiences so they become gifts and learning experiences rather than traumas. In many cases I collaborate with other healing professionals, including medical professionals and psychiatrists who understand this phenomenon, to set up a comprehensive treatment plan that can be carried out wherever the individual lives. I am also available to work with family members to help them to understand and support the individual in crises. All of this work can be done in person or at a distance via Skype or telephone.

Consultation and Conflict Resolution for Spiritual Scandals and Crises
I have supported over 100 spiritual teachers and students to heal from spiritual scandals, crises in communities, and disillusionment. My experience includes but is not limited to: helping individuals and/or communities who are struggling with issues of power, psychological challenges, and imbalances of any type to create greater individual and community health; mediating conflict between teachers and students in complex situations whether or not the student-teacher relationship remains in tact; helping individuals to individuate and separate from communities without trauma and alienation; and helping teachers to become more effective in their roles and understand their relationship to power, money, and sexuality.

I have also successfully mediated – sometimes in collaboration with other professionals – conflict in large and small spiritual scandals. I am able to work with groups of all sizes, and in various configurations, to optimize the possibility of healing, and minimize trauma, for all individuals involved.

All of my work with spiritual crises is conducted in a 100% confidential, hermetically sealed container.
